WordPress powers over 40% of the web. Its ubiquity means that almost every pharma digital team has someone who wants to use it, and almost every enterprise architecture team has someone who wants to ban it. The reality is more nuanced than either position: WordPress is genuinely appropriate for certain pharmaceutical use cases, and genuinely inappropriate for others. Getting that distinction wrong — in either direction — creates real problems.
What WordPress Does Well
WordPress's strengths are real. A well-configured WordPress site is fast to deploy, easy for non-technical editors to operate, and backed by an enormous ecosystem of plugins, themes, and support resources. For pharmaceutical organizations, this translates to specific use cases where WordPress delivers value:
Corporate communications sites — investor relations pages, press release archives, leadership blogs, and recruitment content do not require MLR workflows or multi-market regulatory management. They require clean, maintainable content management at reasonable cost. WordPress handles this efficiently.
Disease awareness microsites — single-market, patient-facing educational campaigns that carry no promotional claims and require no drug-specific regulatory compliance can be built and operated in WordPress. The content is simpler, the governance requirements lighter, and the time-to-market benefit significant.
Event and congress presence — temporary sites for medical congresses, symposia, and continuing medical education programs are a natural fit for WordPress. They have short lifespans, defined content structures, and no ongoing regulatory maintenance burden.
Internal communications portals — employee-facing intranet content, internal brand guidelines, and HR documentation do not require the same compliance overhead as patient or HCP-facing content.
Where WordPress Creates Risk
The problems begin when WordPress is applied to content that requires the governance infrastructure it does not have by default.
MLR workflow is not built in. WordPress has a basic draft/published workflow, and plugins like PublishPress or Oasis Workflow add approval stages. But these implementations are fragile compared to what commercial enterprise platforms provide. They require careful plugin management, are subject to breaking changes on WordPress core updates, and do not offer the audit trail depth that regulators expect.
Multi-site multi-market management is complex. WordPress Multisite handles multiple sites under one installation, but it was not designed for the kind of content inheritance and market governance that pharma requires. Managing 20 market sites in WordPress Multisite, with controlled propagation of safety language updates and locked regulatory fields, requires significant custom development — at which point you are building the platform you should have bought.
Headless WordPress has real limitations. WordPress's REST API and WPGraphQL are widely used for headless implementations, but the content modeling capabilities are not designed for complex pharmaceutical data structures. Custom post types and Advanced Custom Fields can get you far, but the content type system lacks the rigor of platforms designed for structured content from the ground up.
Security and update burden. WordPress's plugin ecosystem is its greatest strength and its greatest risk. A pharma site running 20 plugins — as most do — requires vigilant security monitoring and update management. Each plugin is a potential vulnerability, and the HCP portals or patient support programs that pharma companies build often contain personally identifiable health information that makes security lapses unacceptable.
WordPress VIP: The Enterprise Option
WordPress VIP is Automattic's managed WordPress hosting platform, used by large media companies and enterprise clients who want WordPress's editorial simplicity with enterprise infrastructure and support. It addresses some of the concerns above: managed security, performance, and compliance infrastructure at the hosting layer.
WordPress VIP does not, however, solve the workflow and content governance gaps in WordPress core. For pharmaceutical use cases requiring full MLR workflow, the platform still requires significant custom development or plugin implementation that adds risk and maintenance overhead.
The Right Framework for Evaluating WordPress in Pharma
Ask three questions before choosing WordPress for a pharmaceutical digital property:
-
Does this content require MLR review? If yes, you need either a platform with built-in workflow or a significant plugin investment with dedicated technical maintenance.
-
Does this content vary by market with locked regulatory language? If yes, WordPress will require custom development to handle market governance at scale.
-
Does this property handle personal health information for patients or HCPs? If yes, the security posture requires explicit architectural planning beyond what a typical WordPress deployment provides.
If the answers are no, no, and no — or if the scope is genuinely simple — WordPress is a reasonable, cost-effective choice. If any answer is yes, a more purpose-built platform will save you significant pain downstream.
